It is so important to go to Him expectantly...silently...and frequently.
“The willingness to obey every word from God is critical to hearing God speak.”
― Henry T. Blackaby
This week we have spent time looking at what scripture has to say about God speaking to us. We read in John chapter 10 and learned that Jesus says that we should be able to recognize his voice in a way that causes us to come…to respond. He also taught us that we can know His voice so well that we won’t follow a stranger.
We talked a little about how having the type of relationship with Jesus where we can know His voice has unimaginable benefits. Some of these were allowing us to know Him more fully, granting us the ability to distinguish His voice from the voices of others so well that we can respond to it even when we don’t understand it, and it positions us to be ready to serve others.
At the end of our time, we were able to acknowledge that if we want a radical relationship with God…one that has an effect on the fundamental core of who we are…a fundamental effect on our homes and our communities…scripture calls us to hear His voice.
So today we come together with those precepts as our understanding. Now we get to explore what it looks like to function in those beliefs. And sometimes this is where we might head down different paths.
We are not going to be afraid of disagreeing, and I am not going to pretend that I fully understand this. On the flip side, let’s all be willing to be open to new things if they align with scripture.
A little about me...
I have heard God in a variety of ways… through His written word, in the voice of others, creation, and I have heard Him audibly speak to me.
But, I don’t think I would have recognized Him had I not already fallen in love with His Word.
The Bible tells us that …
"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." Psalm 119:105
"The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple." Psalm 119:130
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1
Reading and knowing His Word is so important in knowing His voice. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that to recognize counterfeit you must study the original. And that is true with knowing His voice.
So let’s spend some time today studying His Word. Read a passage in scripture and listen for God to speak through it. You can pick any passage you would like. If you’d like a suggestion, pick one of the Psalms.
Read through it three times. The first time, read like you normally would, without stopping. The second time read it through aloud. And the third time read it slowly and stopping to make notes in the spots that grab your attention.
You may have done this many times before, but there is one quick thing I would like for you to add…Pray Psalm 119:36 over it before you read…” Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain!”
Now take time to allow God to speak to you through His Word.
This is how we can take the time to recognize His voice above all others…study it!
As we learn to discern and recognize, we can be sure that the Bible is true and active. But God also speaks in other ways…
"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." John 10:27
"And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left." Isaiah 30:21
"The Spirit shows what is true and will come and guide you into the full truth. The Spirit doesn’t speak on his own. He will tell you only what he has heard from me, and he will let you know what is going to happen." John 16:13
"Ask me, and I will tell you things that you don’t know and can’t find out." Jeremiah 33:3
The more we know His voice through scripture, the easier it is to recognize Him when He calls be it a whisper or a thundering voice.
Try and find another time today and go outside or into a space where you can be alone and sit in the silence. Ask God to help you hear Him.
Sometimes we hear Him through the words of scripture, sometimes it is through the Holy Spirit, and other times it can be an audible voice. But the important thing is that we ask for His guidance and take time to notice Him and pay attention.
I’m not saying every time you do this you will hear God, but what we have learned is that it is so important to go to Him expectantly, silently, and frequently. So let’s get into the practice of doing so starting today!!
Prayer:
God, draw my heart to Yours! I want to know you…I want to hear you! Help me to hear your voice alone. Help me to silence my flesh and the things around me so that I become more attentive to you. Amen – So be it.
My prayer mimics that of Paul in Ephesians 1… I pray that through these writings we all might gain spiritual wisdom and insight so that we can know Him more…love Him more…and serve Him more
