“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” – CS Lewis
The Bible teaches a lot about light.
Jesus is the light.
“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” – John 9:5
We as Jesus’ followers have light.
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”– 2 Corinthians 3:18
Light defeats darkness.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5
“..the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” - Matthew 4:16
I thought it might be interesting to look at what light is?!! Well, at least a simplified version of it. (there’s a lot of light info out there!!!)
Light travels as electromagnetic waves…or waves of energy. There are two types of light sources that we will look at…primary and secondary.
A primary source of light creates light. It doesn’t need another source. Examples of this are the sun, flames of a campfire, fireflies, a flashlight, and even some animals.
Secondary sources don’t create their own light like the primary sources do. Instead, they diffuse or reflect light. They are sources of light only when there’s another light present. Examples of this type of light would be the moon, snow, mirrors, or any other object that that lights up only when it is lit by another source. That is why, when it is dark, you can’t see those items. To be seen, they must have a light source to diffuse or reflect.
Jesus is the light of the world. Spiritually, He is our primary light source. He creates light on His own. He creates light and needs no other source.
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12
We, as his followers, are secondary light sources. We shine a light that points back to our Father.
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16
We reflect the primary light source of Christ.
But how?
How can we reflect Jesus’ light?
We need to be with Him...spend time with Him.
“When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God.” – Exodus 34:29
When Moses came down from the mountain his face lit up because he had been in the presence of God talking with Him. And that is what we need to do as well.
Spend time with Him, talk to Him, listen to Him. Be in His presence.
When we try to go through life being out of the presence of our primary light source, our Creator, we are in darkness. The more we are in the presence of light, the more we reflect that light allowing not only ourselves to see but others to see as well.
If you were to go into a room that is full of objects and shut off all light sources it would be completely dark. You would see nothing. But that doesn’t change the room.
The objects would still be there. You would still be there. The capability of seeing would still be there. But without being in the presence of a primary light source, you are in darkness.
The world around you is the same. Without being in God’s presence, our circumstances are still there. But we are stumbling around in the dark. That is our reality. But once the light comes, a new reality emerges. The darkness is overcome by the light. There is no fight from darkness that light will not win.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5
Your circumstances do not need to change for darkness to be defeated.
You just need the Light.
My prayer mimics that of Paul in Ephesians 1… I pray that through these writings we all might gain spiritual wisdom and insight so that we can know Him more…love Him more…and serve Him more
