In 2005 I was driving home about 10:00 p.m. when a drunk driver got on the freeway going the wrong direction and hit me head on with his Ford F150. I would later find out that the accident happened right at the exact spot on the freeway for me to be taken to the hospital where the premier trauma surgeon in Dallas just happened to be on duty that night. A mile further up or back and I would have ended up at different hospitals. It was the beginning of God showing up for me in what would be 6 months in the hospital and over two years in recovery.
I had a near amputated left leg and a crushed femur in the right leg. While I was in a coma for three weeks the nursing staff was warning my husband that I might be brain injured when I awoke. That was the beginning of several miracles as I didn’t lose any brain function. Psalm 28:7 states “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.” When you are having to learn to do everything again (talk, eat, walk, etc.) you need a promise from God that you can hang on to. You claim that promise for each new task your physical therapist prods you to accomplish.
As days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, I needed more assurance than just physical strength. The nights were especially hard as all visitors were gone. Zephaniah 3:17 says “The Lord your God is with you…He will take great delight in you…but will rejoice over you with singing.”
Such a nice verse, right? I was 52 years old, and I don’t know that I had heard God sing over me. How does He do that? Well, I was to find out He does that like He does most things, through the hands and feet of His people.
One afternoon, I had a mother call me and she said “Lynn, Matalee wants to sing you a song.”
Matalee was three, how could I deny that request and I was prepared to hear “Jesus Loves Me” When Matalee belts out:
“I am a sheep and the lord is my shepherd watching over my soul. My soul to keep guarding over me ever watching wherever I go. And when the winds blow he is my shelter, when I'm lost and alone he rescues me. When the lion comes he is my victory! Constantly watching over me, He is constantly watching over me.” - I Am A Sheep (Dennis Jernigan)
God used a precious, three-year-old child to sing over me that day. I don’t remember the exact time frame, but there would be a second call from Matalee and this time she sang:
“Lay your burden down, every care you carry, and come to the table of grace, for there is mercy. Come just as you are, we are all unworthy to enter the presence of God for He is holy. Lift up your heart, lift up your hands, fall on your knees and pray; for the King of kings and the love He brings is here in this place…” - Here is This Place (ZOE Group)
This is just one way God showed up for me during that difficult time, I wish there was time and space to share more.
We are all loved by an amazing God. That doesn’t mean His love will protect us from hard times. But we can rest assured that He will be right beside us giving us strength and singing over us, if we will just take the time to listen and claim His promises.
As I close let me share my favorite promise, it is from Ephesians 3:20 “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” May each of us always walk each moment of each day in that very power!
My prayer mimics that of Paul in Ephesians 1… I pray that through these writings we all might gain spiritual wisdom and insight so that we can know Him more…love Him more…and serve Him more
